National Geographic looft beurs uit van VIJFTIGDUIZEND dollar
Following its long tradition of supporting and fostering new photographic talent, National Geographic magazine will award an annual grant of $50,000 to a professional still photographer. In addition to the grant, NGM will assign a magazine photography editor to provide guidance for a project undertaken by the grantee. The grantee will have full access to all of the facilities provided to the magazine's regular contributing photographers.
"The National Geographic Society for its first 100 years was mostly interested in exploring the planet. In our second century we are concerned with protecting the planet," said David Griffin, NGM's director of photography. "We will be looking for projects that touch on this spirit of understanding and appreciation of the unique world in which we live."
In the past, NGM has awarded grants to photographers whose projects have showcased various cultures, for example, Brooklyn's Lubavitch culture by Carolyn Drake; Southwest Texas Hispanic culture by Penny De Los Santos; and the groundbreaking coverage by Lauren Greenfield of Hollywood teenagers, which led to the publishing of her book Fast Forward: Growing Up in the Shadow of Hollywood (Chronicle Books).
Any working photographer is eligible. Applications will be accepted from Oct. 1, 2006, to Jan. 1, 2007. The application process will require a written statement outlining either a proposed or current project and examples of the applicant's photography. The work presented should demonstrate an ability to competently photograph the project being undertaken or proposed.
